Context
In a time of continued global uncertainty, an international association organized its 2022 Annual Learning Exchange as a fully virtual experience. The event brought together partners, community leaders, and regional representatives to share insights and build resilience in the face of environmental, social, and health-related challenges, including the ongoing impact of COVID-19. The exchange served as both a space for regional storytelling and a moment to align on future strategies.
Approach
We co-designed and facilitated the online gathering, crafting a journey that was accessible, inclusive, and low-tech. The format combined two core streams: a regional learning exchange focused on achievements and challenges, and a strategic planning track co-developed with consulting partners. To support participation across time zones, languages, and connectivity constraints, we embraced flexible session design. The agenda was structured to provide value whether participants attended the full program or individual sessions. Indigenous storytelling played a central role: every session opened with first-person narratives from the field, fostering a grounded and human perspective. A multilingual facilitation team enabled real-time interaction across language groups, and breakout sessions encouraged active engagement and peer dialogue.
Results
The Learning Exchange succeeded in reinforcing a sense of community and shared purpose among participants, despite the virtual format. It surfaced critical regional insights, amplified the voices of Indigenous Peoples, and enabled cross-learning across geographies. The event also laid the groundwork for future planning and deeper partner engagement, enhancing the organization role as a convener and catalyst for change in land rights and environmental justice.
