Context
An important international organization convened a strategic retreat at its headquarters in Switzerland to strengthen a Global Foresight Network, an essential initiative aimed at anticipating systemic challenges and accelerating collaborative responses. The retreat took place against a backdrop of increasing geopolitical, environmental, and technological complexity, and a growing need to enhance coordination, inclusion, and the long-term sustainability of foresight efforts worldwide.
Approach
In close partnership with the organization’s internal team, Matter co-designed and facilitated a full-day working session focused on strategic alignment and community building. The retreat combined inspirational plenaries with collaborative workshops designed to activate the Network’s core principles: high-impact contribution, inclusion, democratic access, sustainability, and shared leadership. A central moment of the day was an interactive workshop on governance and alignment. Participants explored common principles, contribution models, training programs, and approaches to broaden access and representation. The format encouraged the emergence of bold ideas, amplified diverse perspectives, and helped connect existing foresight initiatives across countries and sectors.
Results
The retreat strengthened participants’ sense of shared purpose and alignment, laying the foundation for a more inclusive and sustainable governance model. Together, the group defined shared strategic priorities and actionable steps to expand the reach and impact of a Global Foresight Network, making it more accessible, better coordinated, and increasingly relevant on the global stage.
